EASTER MINI-CARNIVAL - It's ON AGAIN - for the tenth year
The best little carnival there is. Pambula Beach Buccaneers Mini Carnival.
Buccaneers use this to help their trip to AFL9s Masters Carnival in Bali on Queens Birthday Weekend - they sponsor an Orphanage over there, so it's for a good cause.
Vic Metro send a team, usually those long in the tooth, mostly 45+, but a few young guys below 40 fill the need for speed and we have pretty good results.
|Pambula is on the South Coast of NSW near Merimbula (6-7 hours from Melb)|
Beat the traffic out of town and it's a pleasant country drive, with a break in Bruthen and Genoa. Ming leaves before 6am on Good Friday and is up there by lunch to set the tent and have a few frothies.
The games are played at Pambula Beach Sports Complex, about half way between Pambula and Pambula Beach (1km from Pambula, 8km from Merimbula, beware of the Merimbula Brunch traffic jam). See Map
Don't even think about running the Booze Bus gauntlet near Merimbula.
Don't forget to organise your accommodation early, or you'll be camping behind the ground (good spot it is too - power, firewood, ice for eskies and showers at the pavillion, BBQ and band...)
VIC METRO ITINERARY
Friday Evening: 5ish - meet at the bottom pub Pambula

30 MIN DRILLS. 30 MIN SCRATCH MATCH - Had an extraordinary with Naj at the Gillion street Laundry mat.
It's his office away from work.
After canvassing the views of the team, I fed back to Naj the boys love the scratch matches.
He had a great idea to inject some system into it.
The craftsman will reveal all on weds...
Merciless:- These scratch matches aren't helping our game plan.
They are OK for a bit of fun, but the lack of traffic means you can get away with things you never would in a match.
BOUNCING THE BALL - In the 9s as soon as there is a turn over, blokes are clear, but properly in a match they'd settle, spot a teammate and deliver. This doesn't happen enough in the scratchies, blokes are clear and go for a dash, they get tunnel vision and don't use the leads. A defender knows that a runner while bouncing can only go straight*, and it takes some 8 paces to settle for a kick, by which time the pressure is back on and the kick almost always results in a TURNOVER. Just watch the quick kids on a Monday night fall for this trap!
The plan should always be to break away, then steady and spot up a leading teammate.
*Note: Exception to the rule - Adam takes off sideways for a bounce, (but I'm beginning to work out that it's always to his right to get onto that handball)
LONG FORWARD HANDBALL - for player to run onto, works well in 9s. But in a real game there is another line of defence that cuts these off.
OVER THE HEAD HANDBALL - thumping the ball back over your head is a 50/50 chance to get a forward break - good percentage in 9s. In a real pack situation it takes too long, maybe 3 seconds in the air then the receiver will be red-hot.
Thursday, 15 March 2012 11:50 PM - Host: 123-243-102-148.static.tpgi.com.au
Contrarian:- I disagree. The other night I saw more switching of play then I have ever seen. Still not enough. Blokes still kick to contests too often, but Will has been going on since day one about holding possession and avoiding kicking to packs.
The games are starting to inject some different habits. Habits that are hangovers from when we last played in the 90's.
The games could do with a directive. Each side has to switch the play coming out of the backline, but aside from that, I can see the benefits.
I played one praccy game last year. This year 20 odd. Even your brilliant 9's invention has helped blokes prepare for getting rid of the ball under pressure.
There's also the fact it gets blokes down to training. A great drill will never beat a game of footy.

Wilba - Ratty or Ming. Can you send me an update on training, how it is going, numbers, etc by email. I am on a travel email at
I get back on April 2nd and want to train that Wed on April 4th....Fleming or Gillon and then again on April 11th and 18th. Possibly a full scratch match on April 4th or 11th before the first game on 22nd. maybe we can organize something for April 18th before the first game. Can you also see if we can contact Naz our great full back and see if he is going to play? Thanks from Seattle
Ming:- Got 18 last week. Naj had them going OK in the old style, but we miss your enlightened training regime. Where do you get the drills - at your son's footy club?
(Seattle eh? Snap - we already had a Seattle hit)

Ratty - So
The first of the Scratches saw 24 fellows pull on the boots. The Reds vs The Blacks
1st half a little sloppy with fast random passing with not to much vision.Exception the MARS Man made leads and space and clean goaled. Nice to See frank getting down in the ground.Wazza and Mick Adam.Chooks on the move all game reading well and getting and moving on hand passes to great effect. The second half after a talk saw time taken in passing ,a lot more vision and support for forward and defence movement.Naj got the boots on and marked high and screamed hard, lovely to see him up again. Tiger and Ben bursting lines and andy getting ball while well puffed. hits of the night .Ben on Andy and Mick on Will.Goal of the Night by Mars.Chris running hard though centre making play out of mishapps and Jimmy running dodging ,doing cheack fakes to team mates delights and oppositions annoyances.
A Fun Night bring on More
Ming:- Frank's a terrier! And, you forgot Swainey who took control of the pill. Everyone stayed away from him so he wouldn't make em look like plodders, except Ming who has no illusions there, just tried to kraal (africaans even) him so the lazy bloke down field had time to pick up a man, but Swainey just pushed past when he wanted.
Once again, like the 9s on Mondays, the game went with the pacey blokes in the first half, while the slow and steady, occasionally backwards blokes were able to convert better later in the game by accurately spotting up the leads

WHERE ARE YOU - Mudlarks, Training moves to Wednesday nights as of next week, Feb 29th. We would like to have a bit of simulation game play, maybe some corridor footy but need to get more players along.
Training has been great but sparse on numbers, so how about getting organized next Wed and bring the boots. We only had 4 at training last Thursday in the rain but it was good fun and really enjoyable. On a perfect night tonight just 12 came along and although the standard was high it would have been nice to have some more along to lengthen the drills. This (Feb 29th) will be my last night for a month as we take off on a U.S holiday March 1st and not back till early April. Hopefully by the time I get back training will be in full swing at Gillon Oval.
Get along next week and I will talk to you there. - Will

Rusty - Hi Guys, thanks for the opportunity for letting us play on Saturday. Even though it was tough, it was fun. Great bunch of boys to play with. I've been reading some of these posts and there is some confusion as to who is the fastest masters player. I can tell you that it isn't Jimmy, nor do I think it is me. I think we should have a race off at the next mini carnival, maybe pambula. Jimmy has won the past 2 national sprint championships but he has saved himself during the footy games by not running much at all. By the time the race comes around, all the other runners are stuffed from playing hard games but Jimmy the old coot is as fresh as a daisy. If anyone decides to race against Jimmy, make sure you do it prior to any games or on a non playing day, you watch he will refuse to race against you. He's just as cunning as the old fox ! Good luck for the rest of the season and look forward to playing against you guys for the Andiamo Cup ! Cheers, Rusty
ADAM:- RUSTY- GET ON ADAM. OVER 100 HE WOULD WEAR JIMMY DOWN. SUPER ATHLETE.

Rusty:- I totally agree with you Adam. I said the same thing to Jimmy but he reckons he will beat Ben. I just want Jimmy to race anyone that is fresh, not someone who has played 3 games then he's gotta run against a fresh Jimmy, who doesn't try in his footy matches just so he can win the sprints ! LOL

Rusty:- Actually, I agree with you Jimmy. I think Adam is faster than you. But seriously, do we really care how fast you are off the field? I play footy to be fast on the field, not trying to win National sprint championships when every other player is stuffed and you are fresh as !
Sunday, 26 February 2012 07:37 AM - IP: 188.8.131.52
Rusty:- Even Adam thinks he's faster than you Jimmy and I think he is. But Jimmy, no matter how fast you are, it's no good if you haven't got the ball in your hand and you are chasing bums all day !
Sunday, 26 February 2012 07:41 AM - IP: 184.108.40.206
Jimmy:- You a very lucky little man that we don't cross parth another while I will make you day miserable where u only get less than 5 touchs all day ...
Lol. Football is not about fast it is make up of man components .of which I'm superior .
Sunday, 26 February 2012 08:25 AM - IP: 220.127.116.11
Rusty:- Talk is cheap Jimmy. Ask Jonesy from Essendon. When you played on me for one quarter in the game last year, I had my best quarter with 9 possessions. Not only couldn't you keep up, you were never near me at any stage, not even when they bounced the ball. Also dude, I don't think the brunswick players want to read our crap all the time, especially the stuff you dish out. Ming won't be happy, in fact, I reckon even Ming could beat you in a footy race !
Sunday, 26 February 2012 10:29 AM - IP: 18.104.22.168
Ming:- I knew this would get interesting! Brunswick players love the banter.
PS. What kind of footy race? - I'd only put money on me if it was a footy eating race !

I reckon you could out run him with you eyes close.....lol.
Wait till I tag him I will make his day a hell with only 3 possessions in a games.

Great Day - We will be back - It was a little bit serious, this first effort at AFL9s with TACKLING.
We didn't have a permanent ruck player, but the guys who tried got a few knocks our way.
With our Howitzers Frendo, Paws and Liv unable to make it, we had an unfamiliar on-ball team and thank you for to Rusty, Jimi and Doc of whom we didn't make full use.
Brunswick were considerably the oldest team in the comp, after all - this was over-35s,
but we kicked 14 goals so weren't humiliated (though eventual winners Melbourne Supers played with us like dolls).
Some of the opposition clubs had beautiful set plays and kicking skills, which we didn't display so well.
Turnovers kill you in this format, and we sprayed our kicks, though Tony Fodge was a great marking target up forward, we murdered Bondy.
9 ON THE BENCH IS TOO MANY - OUR 6 WAS A BIT OF A PAIN TOO

Liv - If AFL9s is similar to the touch game I play, the best strategy I would recommend is to maintain possession and avoid bombing the ball into the forward line. This may involve passing the footy either sideways or backwards. I would also maintain a fresh side by subbing regularly which may not be an option if your squad isn't large enough.
Good luck on Saturday boys!!
Merciless:- Thanks, Liv. I've had to calm the troups wanting to know why you were only going to play half the day. They don't know you've been playing indoor footy, touch footy, vets cricket, trugo and cross country skiing this week. When I told them you were doing a Charity Relay Run Friday-Sat and you have the 3am stint, they all volunteered to give you a wake-up call on Sat morning to get your Ball Magnetism onto the Mudlark jersey again.
