9's STRATEGY - LIV- YOU'VE PLAYED THIS 9'S STUFF FOR YEARS, WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON WINNING.
FROM THE GAMES I'VE PLAYED IT'S KEEPINGS OFF, BUT TURN OVERS ARE DEADLY AS THE GROUND IS JUST SO OPEN. THOUGHTS COACH?
Strategy Smategy:- One of Liv's cricket teammates played in Bali last year. And he says that tiredness in the latter games a the major influence in the results.
We have a small side, and the truism is that "quick guys get slower, but big blokes dont get smaller"
could mean that we would be silly to even think about kicking the ball in the air.
Also, there are boundary umps (we have to supply one and a goalie for the game after each of ours) so it looks like throw-ins!!! Very different to what we've been playing on Mondies - you can punch the ball over the boundary for defence.

ADAM:- Don't get tired...that'll do. Thanks Ming.
Tuesday, 14 February 2012 07:42 PM - IP: 184.108.40.206
Dont bomb it into the forward line:- Keep possession - go sideways or backwards to a loose man - wait for the defence to make a mistake!
The ground is so small, that a little backward kick is still within range of a lead in the forward zone.
We could BONDY it into the forwardline - he's been a star on Monday nights

First coach's report for the season.....YES in Feb - Training began last Thursday night and after a 26C day the night was absolutely perfect. These summer evenings are much better fun at our old age than those cold, wet and windy winter nights....so don't kick back and say it is too hot or too early, come on down and enjoy.
We had 14 to training on the first night which included a couple of new guys, so looking to get more of our regulars up and running. I always say that we will go for an hour but it seems to lengthen out a bit but everyone should come down and work at their own pace and for as long as is comfortable on their bodies. We do have ages ranging from 35 to nearly 60, so we need to cater for all.
There is talk of a number of new players coming down and going on our potential last year we should be in for a strong season. If we get the players we hope for in the Masters we just need to strengthen the numbers a bit in the O/47's, so if you know of any ex players who are looking for something to rejuvenate them, get them to come down for a run.
I have a Coaches Wish list........here goes;
Pretty simple really. Remember training nights coming are each Thursday at Fleming Reserve. Ground is in great nick and we actually get more room than we do on Gillon with the kids using half the ground.
|Improve our communication. We have email, internet and sms messages but never sure who is getting the messages. My biggest communication problem is game day and trying to arrange a team with 15mins left before game time. Any suggestions would be great. If we have any computer geeks amongst us who could make up an interactive game day spread sheet I would love to discuss.|
|Need some help with a good team manager, couple of helpers for goal umpire, scoreboard, etc. If you have a retired family member, brother or other relative who loves organizing or helping get them onboard. The team manager could make such a difference in preparing on game days||We aren't a strong social club but it would be good for everyone to have a beer or other drink after the game and either host the opposing team (if at home) or have a drink with the opposition and watch a bit of the 35's on away days. |
If you can't make Thursday's or want to train two nights there is still the AFL 9's being played at Fleming on a Monday night. Mostly Mudlarks but a few others as well, including a number of kids who try and not get flattened by the "big" boys. See you all soon. - Will

Castlemaine Masters 9s all day Feb 18 (with normal tackling)
MASTERS TRAINING RESTARTS
Thursdays 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd Feb at Fleming
Be there early and warming-up for a prompt 6:30 start.
Will has great drills that are sophisticated and also a bit of fun.
(This is not the 9s scratch matches, but Will has been known to have a few mins of various competitions)
See you there
Then we go to Wednesdays from 29th Feb, most of March at Fleming,
then once Cricket finishes with it, back to Gillon Wed nights throughout the season
Twas a bit hot this 9s - Jan 23:- OK so it was 34 or so, and the sea breeze didn't come in.
A few were away - or stayed away, and NAJ could only umpire.
- we had 9 there, so 4-a-side! Smaller ground 50 x 100m. How bad can it be?
1 Forward, 1 Back and 2 in the Engine Room. Let's go
What an open fast flowing game this 9s er 4s!
I reckon it got hotter, certainly when they got the overlap and we had to chase - or was it the stand blocking the South Easterly? Gee I was desperate for a breath.
3 x 7 minute thirds was all we could manage, with about 10 for breaks.
The codgers cracked in the third and the whipper snappers took control.
Come back next week you blokes, the codgers need you!

FULL DETAILS:- Hi Everyone, We are now just over 2 weeks from the Castlemaine Masters and preparations are going well.
1. Reduced Entry Fee - We have had some difficulty obtaining enough information from teams to arrange the commemorative t-shirts for the event. We have therefore cancelled the shirts and reduced the entry fee to $280 per team. If you have already paid the full amount then we will arrange a refund or credit you with tickets to the Masters Dinner.
2. The Draw - Each team is guaranteed to play 3 matches plus finals. The final draw will be released closer to the event but the games are likely to begin at 8:30am and conclude at 7:00pm.
3. Game Times - The game format is 2 x 12 minute halves with a 5 minute half time interval. There is no break between games, the coin toss will take place at half time in the preceding game, then at the final siren the next two teams immediately take their place on the field ready to begin. Due to the tight timeline of the day it is crucial teams are ready to play immediately when scheduled.
4. Umpires - Central Umpires are provided for each game. If any teams have any umpires who are interested in helping out on the day please let me know. After each team finishes their game, they need to provide 1 boundary and 1 goal umpire for the next match.
5. Facilities - A space under marquee cover and chairs will be provided for each team. Drinking water is also provided. Showers are available at the ground. A kiosk will operate during the day with a variety of food and drink available
There is a public swimming pool adjacent to the ground which players and spectators will have free access to, as well as a children’s playground.
6. Masters Dinner - Following the completion of the tournament we will host a dinner at the same venue. The night will also include a local cover band, “Balls and All’. Tickets for the dinner will be $20 per person. For catering purposes please advise numbers attending by Monday February 13th.
7. Courtesy Bus - A courtesy bus will operate between Castlemaine and the playing venue at various times during the day and night.
8. Competition Rules - The competition rules can be found here:
Looking forward to seeing you all at the tournament.

Well, Here's a WORRY - The FUTURES COMMITTEE have a PROPOSAL for the next 4 years...
The DRIVING FORCE is the AGE-DISPARITY in Masters and also Vets, and Age-CHEATING by some clubs.
The AIM for 2015, 3 years down the track is to have 35/40/45/50/55s age-groups as per Nat.l Carnival.
The HOPE is to keep blokes playing longer in FAIRER age-groups
The EFFECT on Brunswick could be HUGE. How many players do lose from our 35-42 brigade???
HAVE A GOOD HARD LOOK AT THIS and let the committee know what you think.
Sarge, Commander, Tiger, Dominator and Merciless will have to work out how we vote.
Stoney:- I don't know about this at all. What's the fixation with age? I reckon it should be based on how old you look rather than how old you actually are. Fur instance, there could be one over 40s comp for blokes with hair and one for blokes without hair. Or over 50s (with angina), over 50s (without). Or my favourite, a comp only for blokes who've done a hammy or had a history of hamstring injuries. Call it the Soft Tissue Injury League or STIL for short. Imagine the betting possibilities!

BRUNY9s RESUMES Mon 23rd - I hope everyone had a decent break over the New Year and now it's time to start working that extra waistline up onto the biceps. - Ming
BRUNY9s will resume next Monday 23rd January at 6pm at Fleming Park, Albert St, East Brunswick
UPDATE from Will... Hello to all,
In case you weren't aware I will be coaching again this year with the assistance of Kanna. The O/47's will be shared by the two Tim's (Dolan and Ratcliffe). It has been an interesting season already with the Monday night kicks played in the AFL 9's format. This has seen a number of new players mixing in with some quick young men and some first timers to the game. Great fun and it continues from the end of January.
Mudlarkers are free to get down and have a kick with whoever turns up but our actual training will be taking place on Thursday nights from Feb 2nd. We will train on Thursdays at 6.30pm during Feb (9th, 16th, 23rd) and switch to Wednesdays from Feb 28th.
| Gillon Reserve won't be available so you will have to keep tuned to email, sms or the MUD for confirmation on a ground. Ming will see if we can use Fleming Park and if not we will probably go back to De Chene Reserve in Bell St (opposite the end of Nicholson St and Number 1 tram).|
We used it last year and it was in great nick.
|(DeChene is prebooked)|
We can get FLEMING
via MCC Sports&Rec.
Checking Costs - Ming
| The Monday night mini games are non contact and have quite a few juniors playing. The rules are a bit different and it is almost a tag game....depends on if Doli, Liv or Ming are umpiring They are good for a bit of fitness but not really what we need as our main source of training leading into the season. || I will be overseas for the month of March in the U.S and training will pass over to either of the Tim's or Kanna.|
Training really picked up last year, as did our numbers, so we are hoping for another increase again in 2012. We have already had 6-8 new players down during November and December, so need to keep that momentum going. Get the word out to your mates and lets get good numbers to training.
| Training will be similar to last year where we started right on 6.30 with some running and exercise drills, then into the ball work and get plenty of running and kicking in. I am always keen to keep training to 60-75mins as muscles start to ping after that, so try and get there on time and if you do have energy left at the end, there are usually a few to have a kick with.|| More information to follow but get the word out and also lets see if a few of us can come up with some good helpers. Team Manager for the Masters would be a great start.|
All the best for the New Year and start getting yourselves fit. Please forward this on to your friends if you have any interested in playing or just coming down to keep fit "with the blokes".
Ratty:- All good Willy
shall be there on the 23rd with Bells on

Our heartfelt sympathy to his family. Rest in Peace Chappie
Chaps was a strong player for East and West Brunswick in the classic small-ruckman way.
He played for our superules team for several seasons in the mid-nineties and was instrumental in our making finals in those years.
Will:- Sorry to hear that news. I had a look at the photo Ming and recognized Noel Borg who I played with at Hadfield. Also went to school with him at Haddy High.

Tiger - Merry Christmas all
I saw an article in The Age yesterday, qouting a Collingwood sports guy. He's just completed a study that proves that cold stretching, actually reduces performance in the game that follows. Couldn't believe that some sports people still sit on the change room floor and do the hammys, calfs etc. He suggested quick run throughs and standing jumps to get the heart going instead - this proven to help performance.
This may explain our form for the past seven years.
And help us next season. Warm up lap then run throughs, lads.
Thought it might be helpful. Right, back to my eggs then.
See you all next year. Cheers, Tiger
chook:- spot on tiger.new research has found that stretching before sport may actually make muscles contract and become shorter the exact opposite of what you want before working out.active warm gets the blood flowing and primes the muscles and joints for movement.post stretching is the best.merry xmas all cheers.

Sporting Pulse sez:- Basic injury prevention
Sport helps you keep your body happy and healthy, however, injuries can prevent you from participating in your favourite sport.
Below are some quick tips to staying injury free.
* Routine physical / fitness screening
* Warm up and Cool down with slow, gently activities.
Save stretching for your cool down period.
* Build up gradually until you reach the length and intensity of exercise you’re aiming for.
It takes time to learn the proper techniques.
* Rest and Recovery. It is important to rest, it can make you stronger
* Wear appropriate protective gear and equipment, this may include;
protective pads, mouth guards, helmets and gloves.
Make sure you use it correctly and that it fits well.
* Avoid playing in pain WHAT?! HOW?
* Pay attention to your hydration – drink plenty of water.
* Use proper techniques, if you’re unsure about the technique ask your coach or a friend.
* Play safe – follow the rules.

STRANGE BUT TRUE - HOME PAGE HAS MYSTERIOUSLY REVERTED BACK TO THE 'OLD' RULES. IT'S IF YOU ARE OVER 35, NOT 40.
Ming:- Ratty runs the Brunswick Home page, and I think he is on the case right now.
I had hacked in and changed it to o35 last time someone squealed, but I forgot to tell Ratty, or he didn't come to training or something, so his Page Writing program wasn't updated.
As we have an affiliation with Marcellin in Premier Division o35s, especially sharing players in the Legends, we meet the criteria for Premier Division Reserves (o35s!) = our old "Masters".
Calling the teams SUPER35s, XTRA35s and OVER47s is clearer than Supers, Masters(Res) and Legends.
Or even O-35s, X-35s and O-47s
I went to Marcellin, and will pay subs there next year, so that's at least one official eligiblity for the cross-over criteria. I think Budgie trains there too. - If there are any more - please let us know.
Marcellin and Brunswick always play at the same away venues, so when there is room for Brunswick players to be called up to Marcellin, we willingly supply them.
We have less than 20% of our "Masters" in the 35-40 bracket, and we are playing First Division, so we do NOT compare with second division teams that wish to drop their Supers and only play Masters and Legends.
We understand the gripe for Premier division clubs who have to split their forces playing Marcellin/Brunswick, but it's only once every 2 years.
