Wilba - Rooming with the Brunswick boys.
Hey to all the Mudlarks back at home. It is 6am here on the Sunshine Coast and getting ready for Game 1. Kanna and I are up at 9am, the rest of the boys are playing later in the day. Normally on the National carnivals there is only Ming, Kanna, myself and Jamie, so great to have some new blood up here. I am rooming with Ming (and Madelaine), Ratty and ex Mudlark Vin Gaffy. Naj, Chook and Liv (who isn't here yet) are a floor below us. Great to have double our numbers and looking forward to doing what other teams do and have a team dinner one of the nights. Good luck to all of the boys today.

IT'S HERE - AFL9s
We are getting the use of Fleming Park on Mondays at 6pm,
and there are official comps in October.
- WHO'S UP FOR IT?? Or do we go on our own for a year to pick up some numbers?
AFL 9s is the AFL's alternative version of the game.
It has been developed so that all Australian football enthusiasts - and those new to the game - can play matches that parallel the traditional game. See AFL9s Website
Introduction: AFL 9s is easier to play, less physically demanding and provides an environment whereby participation, enjoyment and safety are a priority.
AFL 9s can be played in community competitions, schools and overseas with people of all ages and ability levels to participate in male, female or mixed teams as determined by the individual competition.
NUMBERS: Two teams of nine (9) with interchange players.
FIELD: max 100 metres (can be modified for age/abilityof participants), and is divided into three zones, a mid zone and two scoring zones.
SCORING: By designated forwards only (or no restriction version).
MARKING/FREES: A mark is awarded irrespective of the distance the ball has travelled and if the ball hits the ground it is an automatic turnover (selected competitions only).
TACKLING: restricted tackling (junior rules) is available in the contact version comps,
- OR - TOUCH: Less vigorous SOCIAL format (one handed or optional two-handed TOUCH)
- OR - TAG: by the removal of a TAG that each player wears.
|REGULATIONS||TACKLE version RULES|
See AFL9s Website
|TOUCH and TAG Versions|
Ming:- Mondays we officially get to use Fleming park, East Brunswick are
Nov 7,14,21,28, - break - Jan 30, Feb 6,13,20,27, Mar 12,19,26
We might sneek on for a kick Oct 31.
National Carnival players get back from Maroochydore on the 16/17th, so a week or two rest is scheduled. That's Kanna, Will, Chook, Najj, Liv, Jamie and me.
PLANS: While away, I will sketch up some posters that we can put up in shops and gyms. Does anyone have any ideas?
If we advertise that we will teach AFL9s skills to anybody, male, female, mixed, old, not-so-old, infirm and fit, refugees etc and then give them a gentle game, we should pick up plenty, we do want to make it a recruiting base for Winter too.
(Legal Issue: to have anyone under-18, one of us needs to have a Working with Children Certificate)
COSTS: Ground and shed will cost about $250 total for 12 nights.
Footies, posts, hats, medical, refreshments expenses - sell drinks? (not alcohol)
- probable turnover for season ~$600 ($50 per night)
If we can get average 20 there, it's ~$2-50 per session
Also... We might be able to snare some guys from other clubs to come down for a challenge game.

najj - great night lads, all award winners ,all worthy winners, well done to everyone involved and all that contributed, well done on a great year, and lets have a better one next year.
Tiger:- Afternoon all. Presentation Night was a very funny, terrific occasion for the club.
I just wanted to mention the trophy won by the B & F winners. NAJ created a mudlark for each, made from wood that's between 400-600 years old. It's a beautiful, simple trophy that made the non-winners a bit green. Congrats Naj. It's the sort of thing that gives our little club a bit of culture and identity. Who'll win the bird next year, I ask?
Also, for those not there, it was announced that the Masters B &F next year will be the Steve Kannagiesser medal. The 47s will remain the Peter Laming Medal. Despite the medal being birds.
So really it should be the Steve Kannageisser Bird.
Anyway. Cheers all

Kev W:- Well done to everyone for a great year. Congratulations to all the award winners. I have really enjoyed this year. I especially enjoyed the road trips to the away games - thanks Chris, Doli, Naj and Budgie. I will miss it next year while I am in the deep south of the US in Starkville Mississippi. I'll keep in touch via the Mud and will be back and ready to have another go in 2013. Best wishes for the 2012 season lads. My brother Scott is calling it a day at Panton Hill and he intends to play for the Mudlarks next year. Cheers

Tiger:- CONGRATULATIONS TO MING!
Our glorious leader Ming has been awarded life membership of the entire league. Which means he can get into any ground and watch any of our games absolutely free! A lifetime's love of the game, and unrelenting hard work has been rewarded. Thanks Ming for all that you do behind the scenes as well as the work on game day. It's no exaggeration to say the club simply wouldn't exist if not for you.
To honour MIng, the winner of the B & F awards in both 40s and 47s, will win the Peter Laming Medal.
Sure it's a trophy, but you get the gist.
The only greater honour would be to name one of our newborn, Ming. As in, 'Have you met my baby daughter; Ming?'
Just a thought.

Tied for BEST & FAIREST in the Comp.
CONGRATULATIONS to MARK FRENDO on another great series of performances

Tiger:- Brilliant result Frendo. You're a champ mate. Who can forget the game against Ascot Vale when you sprinted from left half back flank to right half back flank, stopped then ran back again - all without a bounce. No-one seemed to care.
Congratulations mate, you've done the club proud.
See you all at our vote count. Who knows who'll win the Peter Laming Medals for the 40s best and fairest, and the 47s Best and Fairest. Insiders have suggested a tight count for boths

MATCH REPORT PART ONE - Well satisfied from that ‘Mingnificent’ post-match barbeque, I made the short but demanding drive (Albion street must be expanded Mayor Asmar!!!)… back to the people’s republic of Northcote with an overwhelming sense that this was a line in the sand year.
Historically I make this assertion on safe grounds. I counted four wins in the previous two years. One of those was a forfeit. This year we won five from nine. Yet in many respects it was this last game that should convince all of us we are a top two side.
Round one, we got done by a bloke moonlighting as Barry hall. Not many of us knew each other, and we played like it. 18 weeks later and we were 17 points down at three quarter time against a side that had lost only once - and that was against Beaconsfield. A team banned from losing.
While rose coloured glasses are standard issue at all levels of AFL, if we’d had Frendo, Vrottis, Sam, Naz Sakiri, and a fit Bourkey…we’d have gone awfully close to winning this.
Faark it, we would have beaten them. In the first half, you couldn’t split the sides. If anything we controlled the ball, they simply used it better when they had it inside 50. Helps when you’ve got an inked up gorilla embedded in the goal square. When we did get in there we looked dangerous. I;ve got no idea where Russell Bourke came from, but we need to keep him before GWS pounce.
Benny took his game to another level. It seems the browner he gets the better he gets. And on this day he was like a magnificent piece of heritage oak. Often all I could make out were the whites of his eyes. Not only did the golden boy gather his usual possession swag, he marked every contested ball.
Downback, Johhny Thirrs displayed disturbing suicide tendencies. Twice he backed into packs without a single short step.
Nick Mann, the Michael Barlow/Mzungu feel good story of the year consistently read the game better than his opponent. While the nitpickers will suggest he got hurt going the other way, it was the sort of risk taking that opened up the game for our runners.
Tiger was one of those who dined out on this run from down back…often it looked like he didn’t have an opponent. One of the perks for running your opponent into the ground.
So…Willimastown by a point at half time. Sadly this was also the last straw for Stewey’s wife. He’d talked his way into an extra half with the masters, but the administration had moved over to the grandstand wing and a well trained glare suggested there was to be no more negotiation. We also lost Swainy, and I think, Chris as well. Bourkey was on one leg, his hammy by now hanging by nothing more than Liz’s tape.
This reduced our bench to one and a shot hammy. Something that was always going to tell on a warmish afternoon. But not in the third quarter. Again, we didn’t look out of our depth. We had as much of the play, but missed two that we shouldn’t have.
Up the other end, a severly concussed Nick Mann pinpointed two of the Williamstown forwards who obliged by banging the ball back over his head from 20 metres out. At no point though did our blokes stop persisting. Alistair Mcleod is a case in point. I was staggered to hear he’d had two full knee reconstructions. He is like an ageing #@*%! Nic Natuni with a flat punt that could one day kill someone.
At three quarter time Commander Glenn gave the Mudlarks Carte blanche. ‘Throw out the rule book!’ implored Glenn. Watching the way Willy worked their bench, resting blokes regularly, you always suspected the game could open up if we got tired. The final margin, 42 points, did not reflect how close we were. If we can hold this core group together and pick up a couple of extras … there is no question we can finish top two.
Over and out.
Best: Benny (BOG), Thirrs, Pawsey, Kanna, Mingot, Tiger, Mcleod.
Goals: Stan 2, Swainy 1, Stewey 1, Pawsey 1 and one other????
Wilba:- I understand that modesty will not allow our eloquent wordsmith to mention his own name as a key missing ingredient but a speedy tall like Adam would have made a huge difference as well....along with his missing sidekick Wazza. Whatever happened to Wazza anyway??
Also missing and worth mention were Greg Walker, Presti, Scott Walker and the enigmatic Ula.
